Season 13, Episode 3 - The Dark Muse

Hail, Cromrades! This week we summon the Goddess of Dreams to inspire the greatest podcast in all of history! Or at least, we read Karl Edward Wagner's story "The Dark Muse", wherein Kane's friend does something similar! Except, there are risks to summoning this particular eternal, as we learn within this harrowing tale.

What do you think of the story? Let us know!

"I'll need a drop of your blood..."

Season 13, Episode 2- Two Suns Setting

The Cromcast is back for a look at another Karl Edward Wagner tale, this time focusing their savage gaze on "Two Suns Setting". This story has got a far Howardian edge to it than our previous Kane story. It features some great debate on the merits of human civilization plus it has a giant and a sabre-tooth tiger! What more could you want?!

One Things

Jon: The Boys, superheroes getting skewered over on Amazon Prime

Announcing Season 13 - The Left-Handed Path of Karl Edward Wagner's Kane!

Hi all, in prep for the new season, we wanted to spell out our reading list we'll follow as we meet Karl Edward Wagner's Kane. It's a pretty easy approach to things, in that we're reading one short story collection, and one novel. The reading list will follow Night Winds first, and then we'll tackle Bloodstone! Specifically, here's the order of things:

  1. Undertow (in Night Winds)
  2. Two Suns Setting (in Night Winds)
  3. The Dark Muse (in Night Winds)
  4. Raven's Eyrie (in Night Winds)
  5. Lynortis Reprise (in Night Winds)
  6. Sing a Last Song of Valdese (in Night Winds)
  7. Bloodstone

Iconic Warner paperbacks of the books we'll be tackling this season, with the killer Frazetta covers! If you've not visited lately, go to www.frazettagirls.com and treat yo'self!

The History of Cromtober

Cromrades - we have sad news to share with you. There will be no Wine & Witches episode this year. The Wine & Witches crew did assemble and were excited to record for you, but our recorder malfunctioned. They discussed their favorite Halloween TV specials. It would have been good, and we're sad that it was lost. Another episode given up to the podcast gods, never to be heard by mortal ears. If you're bummed about the lack of Wine & Witches in your life this year, please let them know! We will pass the word along to them!

It is of small consolation, but here we have some ridiculous banter beside the fire. Cromtober is nearly history - and as we look further down the road, we see Karl Edward Wagner's creation Kane awaiting us!

Cromtober 2020 continues with our examination of Halloween traditions. Part two features a discussion about that mainstay of the front Halloween front porch, the Jack O'Lantern! Season 12, Episode 7: Hellboy - The Crooked Man

There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.
Welcome back to the mountain trail, Cromrades! We were just about to get dinner started - a little tin of sardines, some saltine crackers, and a big bottle of homebrew, you know... trail food. All of a sudden, this big red feller come runnin' up the trail. Seemed to be in a hurry, so we let him pass. We figured we'd catch up with him, sooner or later. What's that? You know him? He looked a lot like this...

This week we're diving into The Crooked Man by Mike Mignola, with art by Richard Corben, originally published from July through September, 2008. Hellboy has a lot in common with John the Balladeer, and we think you'll agree, and this story is heavily influenced by Manly Wade Wellman's mountain wanderer. If you haven't read this, you owe it to yourself to check it out. The best way to pick it up these days might be in the Hellboy: The Complete Short Stories omnibus

The villainous Crooked Man is brought to horrifying life by the artistic talents of Richard Corben. He's a visually striking character, and we could easily imagine him going up against Silver John.

Josh mentioned some literature about witch balls. Check it out here: Sympathetic Magic in the Kentucky Mountains: Some Curious Folk-Survivals

One Things
Luke: Philip K. Dick Energy - Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, and A Scanner Darkly

Next time - we go to the movies to watch the Cohen brothers classic, O Brother, Where Art Thou? It's bonafide!

Season 12, Episode 5: Owls Hoot in the Daytime

Welcome back, Cromrades! This week, we join John the Balladeer in a lonely cabin at the base of a secluded mountain, where possums as big as dogs wander, an ancient treasure lies buried, and Owls Hoot in the Daytime! This story was one of the later John the Balladeer stories that Manly Wade Wellman published, and it certainly has that feeling of a sort of finality that we couldn't quite put our fingers on to describe accurately!

Art by Thomas Boatwright

One Things

Season 12, Episode 4: Call Me From the Valley or That Ain't My Haint

We're down in a rainy holler today, trying to keep up with John the Balladeer. He's fixing to get into a cabin to escape the rain but who knows what sorts of haints may be up to something in such a hovel. Especially in a place touched by history like this one. I reckon if you tune in, you'll find out just what kind of trouble we find in Call Me From The Valley.

Won't you join us for a dumb supper?

Season 12, Episode 3: The Little Black Train (A Liminal Journey)

Manly Wade Wellman | The Weird Tradition | LibraryThing
Welcome, Cromrades! It has been a while, but we are still rolling down that Manly Road through the Appalachian Mountains with Manly Wade Wellman and his Silver John stories! This week, we take a ride on The Little Black Train (read it here) and see that, though death comes for each of us, a sinful life leads to a ride on the little black train to the bad place!

Note: Josh meant Josh Turner, not Josh Groban. Honest mistake. There are a lot of Joshes. But we are all Josh, each in our own way. Aren't we?

Shout out to Dreaming Creek Brewery, we're fans of their Kentucky Common! Stop by there if you're in the Richmond, KY area!

One Things:
Josh: Modern Video games: Video Card + Skyrim = Crazy Delicious!
Luke: The World Fantasy Awards Volume 1 & Volume 2. Also Abe Books!
Jon: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck from Fantagraphics!

Featured on This or That - Tolkien Names vs Antidepressants

Lincoln's death train is an example of a little black train as harbinger of death, or ferry to the afterlife. We present a lengthy discussion on trains as symbols of transition, and as liminal space.

Next time: Call Me From The Valley. The Manly Road continues!

Bourbon & Barbarians, Season 3 Bonus Episode about Skullcano Island!

Hile, adventurers! We interrupt your regularly-scheduled Bourbon & Barbarians broadcast for this special release... We are joined by an old school friend from way back, Levi Combs, who spearheads Planet X Games!

Planet X has previously released Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride, and An Occurrence at Howling Crater. You may remember a previous episode we did with Levi about a year ago? Well, Levi and Co. are back at it, and have a Kickstarter running for their new D&D 5E module, Escape from Skullcano Island. This is a legit sandbox module, so you'll get uber-playability out of the module. You can back the ca. 150 pg module and get in on the goodness at the $17 mark, so consider getting in on the action! Beyond this, we also talked about Planet X's contribution to ZineQuest 2, which is shipping now to backers! It's legit OSR goodness for yer B/X or First Edition game!!

This was another fun conversation with Levi. We didn't just talk about the Kickstarter, we got into the DIY ethic, art/cartography, and spend some time talking about his process of putting a module together that is ready for publication. Hope you like it!

We close the episode with White Zombie's "Super Charger Heaven." All music was obtained legally; we hope our discussion of this content makes you want to go out and purchase the work!

Announcing Season 12 - The Manly Road Story List!

We reckon it's time we become acquainted with Manly Wade Wellman, and what better way to do that than to journey through the Appalachians with John the Balladeer? Season 12 takes us East - to the mountains!
  1. O Ugly Bird! – Introducing Manly Wade Wellman, John the Balladeer, and The Manly Road. John comes across a backwoods wizard and his giant avian familiar.
  2. Vandy, Vandy – While investigating the origins of an old song, the lyrics seemingly come alive in an unexpected way.
  3. The Little Black Train – A backwoods ghost train issues forth to claim a sinful soul.
  4. Call Me From the Valley – John gets involved in an ancient feud that should have ended long ago but somehow still lingers…
  5. Owls Hoot in the Daytime - John faces down a demon who dwells within an entrance to a mountain.
  6. Where Did She Wander? – John investigates the hanging of a witch and finds something more than he expected.
  7. The Crooked Man, by Mike Mignola and Richard Corben. Hellboy investigates a possible witching in the Appalachian mountains when a man named Tom Ferrell shows up in the area for the first time in twenty years. The people in the area blame a woman named Cora that Tom knew when he was younger. So Tom and Hellboy go to Cora's place to investigate...
  8. O Brother, Where Art Thou? - In the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.
We'll light out down that mountain trail with Silver John real soon...
