Season 5, Episode 3: The VCRP Present Waterfront Fists!

Welcome back, Cromrades! This week we have a special episode, the Violet Crown Radio Players adaptation of Howard's Waterfront Fists!
By way of an explanation, this is a re-release of an recording provided to us by long-time friend of the show, Mark Finn! Besides Finn's scholarship and role as an editor for Skelos Magazine, Mark served as the creative director of the Violet Crown Radio Players from 2002-07. Unfortunately this group is defunct, but if you want to read more about them, check out their blog here. During the group's hey-day, however, Mark adapted Howard's classic "Sailor Steve Costigan" story, Waterfront Fists. Mark approached us about sharing the troupe's recording of that adaptation here on the Cromcast, and of course we jumped at the chance to showcase the performance!

Waterfront Fists was first published by Howard back in September of 1930 in Fight Stories (cover below). This story happens to be in the public domain like the Conan stories we've been reading and discussing, so if you're looking to read the original text, check it out here on Project Gutenberg!

Season 5, Episode 2: The Pit of the Serpent (The Original Thrilla in Manila!)

Welcome back, Cromrades! This week, we set sail for Manila with Sailor Steve Costigan and the crew of the Sea Girl. Costigan has a little coin in his pocket and is looking for some rest and relaxation. Little does he suspect, he'll be facing down Bat Slade toe to toe in THE PIT OF THE SERPENT!
This, the first Sailor Steve Costigan story, was originally published in the July 1929 issue of Fight Stories

You don't need to travel back in time with two dimes to find a copy though! You can read it in Boxing Stories by Buffalo Press, or Waterfront Fists and Others. Either would be a fine addition to your bookshelf. No extra ducats? You can find the story on WikiSource

One Things
Jon: The Art of the B Movie (Treat yourself to some fine film art, and fun movie posters!)
Luke: Arrival (2016), directed by Denis Villeneuve. Pre-order it from Amazon! (It's a beautiful film!)
Josh: The science fiction space fantasy film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Play some Star Wars games! We recommend Shadows of the Empire, Tie Fighter, and Knights of the Old Republic! (We are one with the Force, the Force is with us!)

Next time we set sail, we'll meet Mike, Costigan's bulldog companion in The Bull Dog Breed. (Read it on WikiSource!)

Bonus Episode: The Violet Crown Radio Players' "Waterfront Fists!"

Hey all, we're back with a special episode! You can download it directly here.

We are happy to present a Howard story adapted by Austin's Violet Crown Radio Players!

By way of an explanation, we were approached with this opportunity by Mark Finn, a friend of the show with whom we had a chance to interview back in December regarding his Howard biography, Blood and Thunder. Didn't we mention on that episode that Mark is a multi-faceted fellow

Besides his scholarship, Mark served as the creative director of the Violet Crown Radio Players from 2002-07.

Hope you all enjoy it as much as we do!

Episode 11: Time for a Finnterview! (or, We Can't Believe It!)

This is a big one for us! For this episode we were able to have a chat with Mark Finn, author of "Blood and Thunder: The Life and Art of Robert E. Howard"! Mark recently released the second edition of this volume, which you can easily purchase from the Robert E. Howard Foundation or from Amazon. If you've listened to any of our previous shows, you've heard us previously discuss Mark's literary criticism.

Man, what a well-read, fun, and easy guy to talk with! We had a blast talking to Mark and look forward to the next time he can join us!

Want another Finn fix? Here's Mark's blog!

If you can get your hands on it, maybe check out de Camp's Dark Valley Destiny?

Want to get into the small-press 'zine scene? Check out REHupa!

Interested in some of the other pulp podcasts out there? We mention the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast and The Double Shadow; check 'em out if you haven't already!

Interested in getting yer hands on some of REH's boxing stories? You should buy Fists of Iron! Volume 1 features an essay from Patrice Louinet, but Mark will be providing the foreword for Volume 2.

Want to read about the birth and growth of the Weird Western? Check out Undead in the West II, which features literary criticism from Mark and a slew of others.

Interested in the Violet Crown Radio Players that Mark mentions in the episode? Live in Austin, or visit periodically? Then friend them on Facebook!

And be on the lookout for Mark's upcoming fiction work, The Adventures of Sailor Tom Sharkey, soon to be available from Fight Card Books!

Finally.... A BIG thank you to Beaucoup Pop!!! Without their help, this episode wouldn't have been possible. Big thanks especially to Tressa (the beer and pie are forthcoming)! If you haven't listened to their podcast before, go ahead and check 'em out. Geekery abounds :)

Thanks everyone! Happy listening!!!
