Season 21 Episode 1: The Wind and the Lion and the Eagle!

After that, we discuss 2011's The Eagle, directed by Kevin Macdonald and starring C-Tates, Jamie Bell, and Donald Sutherland.

Season 14 Episode 5: Hardboiled Cinema with Mildred Pierce

 On this episode of The Cromcast, we host a cinema night in celebration of hardboiled cinema for our hardboiled season. We chose to watch "Mildred Pierce" starring Joan Crawford, Luke did some extra credit and read the story by James Cain and watched the Kate Winslet miniseries as well!

This is a sordid tale of murder, capitalism, the patriarchy, and desire all wrapped up in a box. If you haven't seen it yet, we agree with the Library of Congress that it is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and you oughta let your eyes enjoy it.

Season 11, Episode 7: The Wild Bunch and The Proposition

Howdy, Cromrades! This week we to back to the movies, and discuss classic and a modern takes on  revisionist westerns - The Wild Bunch (1969) co-written by Walon Green and Sam Peckinpah and directed by Sam Peckinpah, and The Proposition (2005) written by Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat.

Both of these films depict Howardian themes - civilization vs. barbarism, self reliance, the inexorable march of time and the toll it takes on those who hold on to the past as the rest of the world moves on. We were excited to discuss these movies, as you'll see!

Cromtober 2019 - Frightening Childhood Films with Wine & Witches!

At last, Wine & Witches is back! Ashleigh, Kara, and Liz have returned to discuss frightening films that left a mark upon their childhood! Up first, Ashleigh presents why Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) is actually a horrific movie. Season 7, Episode 6: Grimoires on Film! Evil Dead, In The Mouth of Madness, and The Ninth Gate

Greetings, Cromrades! This week on the show we consider three films that make use of the grimoire trope in different ways. Under consideration are Evil Dead (1981), directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell (et al.), In The Mouth of Madness (1995), directed by John Carpenter and starring Sam Neill (and others), and The Ninth Gate (200), directed by Roman Polanski, and starring Johnny Depp (etc).

Joinnnnn Usssssss....

Can you see the underlying influences in these works? Is there Howard, Lovecraft, Smith, or Bloch to be found? The Ninth Gate was based on the book The Club Dumas by Arturo Pérez-Reverte which we have not read. However, there is a certain element of pulp adventure to be found in the film!

Josh: Superman: American Alien by Max Landis. Vignettes from Clark's early days in Metropolis. Some of the stories are better than others, but Landis has some unique takes on The Man of Steel! If you like Superman, you'd probably like this!
Luke: Mountain! Specifically Nantucket Sleighride. Mountain is one of the underappreciated rock bands from the 70's, and are worth checking out if you're not familiar with their work! They rock hard!
